Starting Gate : The Birth of At The Track
It was the late summer of '03 at Saratoga when Ron Robinson and his 80-plus year old father, Robbie, watched their 42 to 1 long shot hold off the favorite by half a head from the 1/16 pole to the wire. Standing close enough to the rail to catch a little mud in the eye and getting burned by a cigar in the tightly packed crowd, mattered little as they went to the IRS window to get their picture taken.
Back to Hollywood
The pick 3 and trifecta (Ron's forte) wins from that race covered all expenses from their week long trip to New York plus left a substantial bulge in their pockets with the leftover cash. It was on the return trip home when Robbie recommended that Ron abandon his corporate job of over 30 years and dedicate himself to handicapping full time. Further encouraged by his friends from the Study Hall at Hollywood Park (Bob, Jim, George, Sam and Clarence), Ron concluded he was making as much money "at the track" on weekends as he was working 60 hours per week in his corporate job, and seriously considered becoming a full time handicapper.
As a frequent visitor to the "Sign Up" windows of Charlotte and Percy at Hollywood Park, and Don and Debbie at Del Mar (Surfside), their collective encouragement sealed the deal to make the move, thus "At The Track" became a reality. Whether it be the gigantic Great Race Place of Santa Anita (Ron considers the facility a wonder of the world), the tradition of historic Hollywood Park (Seabiscuit, etc.) or the world's biggest continuous party at Del Mar, Ron will be there in his Hawaiian shirt taking notes and cashing big tickets.
